I am an author, editor and film historian based in London. I have written books on film (The Faber Book of French Cinema, In Search of The Third Man and Korda: Britain’s Only Movie Mogul), historical biography (The Man Who Outshone the Sun King) and family history (Mapping the Past: A Search for Five Brothers at the Edge of Empire). Upcoming projects include a documentary about the radical film-maker Lindsay Anderson.

After eight years working in-house as an editor at Penguin Books in the 1990s, I began a long freelance career, which has involved taking on a wide range of editorial and publishing assignments, from basic copy editing through to ghostwriting. 

 

From 2007 to 2019 I taught film history at Queen Mary, University of London, and am currently an archival consultant to the completion guarantee company, Film Finances.
