Twenty-five years ago I helped to write a book about the dot.com crash called boo hoo: a dot.com story from concept to catastrophe. I remember writing the first sentence of chapter 14, “We were on the run...”, while watching the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre crash to the ground in Manhattan.

It was an easily transferable title. Today the impending catastrophe is AI.

 

The welcome message of The Lowest of Low, a recently relaunched website that has valiantly resisted the corporate takeover of the Internet, offers an excellent account of the once hopeful road from home computers through the dot-com crash to the even bigger crash that – possibly or probably? – lies ahead unless humanity can re-discover the better side of itself.
