Carol Reed, The Third Man and Location in Vienna and London
at the Central Film School, 6.30 p.m., 26 November 2026

This is Carol Reed’s old house in Chelsea. He died here (contrary to what the plaque says) in 1976, and was born about three miles away in a house on West Hill, Putney.
He was a London director, who offered some memorable depictions of the town in such films as The Fallen Idol, Oliver! and A Kid for Two Farthings.
So I am very pleased to have the opportunity – after a screening of The Third Man – to discuss, with film writer Pamela Hutchinson, how Carol Reed made the most of filming in a city at the Central Film School, 72 Landor Road, Clapham – also about three miles from Reed’s Chelsea house.
3, in the case of this particular director, was something of a magic number.
